My Product Manager Project Setup
Whenever I join a new project as a product manager, I follow a structured approach to get set up efficiently. This helps me hit the ground running and deliver value quickly. Here's my process:
Understanding the Project
- Project Documentation Review: First step is to read all existing documentation
- Stakeholder Mapping: Identify key stakeholders and decision makers
- Product Vision Session: Schedule time with team leads to understand the vision
- Current State Analysis: Review the product in its current state
- Metrics Review: Understand what metrics matter and current performance
Tool Setup
- Project Management: Set up Linear or Jira workspace
- Documentation: Create central knowledge hub in Notion or Confluence
- Communication: Join relevant Slack channels and set up 1:1 recurring meetings
- Customer Feedback: Set up access to Dovetail or other research repositories
- Roadmapping: Establish roadmap in Productboard or Roadmunk
- Analytics: Get access to Amplitude or Mixpanel dashboards
- Design Collaboration: Join the Figma workspace
- Competitive Research: Set up Feedly streams for industry news
Process Establishment
- Sprint Rhythm: Define cadence and structure for sprint planning, reviews and retrospectives
- Decision Framework: Establish how decisions will be made and communicated
- Success Metrics: Define how we'll measure success for this specific product
- Customer Feedback Loop: Create process for gathering and incorporating user feedback
- Stakeholder Updates: Set up regular update cadence with executives and stakeholders
- Release Planning: Establish release process and communication plan
First 30 Days Plan
- Week 1: Learn context, meet team, understand current state
- Week 2: Define initial hypotheses and identify quick wins
- Week 3: Create first draft of roadmap and strategy
- Week 4: Present plan to stakeholders and iterate based on feedback
This approach ensures I quickly provide value while building strong relationships with the team. I adapt this framework depending on company size, product maturity, and team structure.
